Statement from Michaelangelo Collins Hamilton on the Florida State University Shooting
I’m heartbroken. What happened today at Florida State University is devastating — for the students, for their families, for the entire FSU community, and for all of us who have watched this cycle repeat far too many times.
As someone from Generation Z, I’ve grown up with this fear. We’ve practiced lockdown drills since we were kids, checking the exits in classrooms more often than the syllabus. This isn’t normal, and we can’t accept it as normal.
This has to stop.
As a candidate for the United States Senate, I’m making this promise: I will fight to end the epidemic of gun-related incidents in our country. We need to act — with urgency, with courage, and with common sense. We can take real steps to keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands without taking away the rights of responsible, law-abiding gun owners. I respect the Second Amendment. I also respect the right of every student to make it home alive.
We don’t have to choose between safety and freedom. We can protect both.
Our generation is ready to lead — not with more empty promises, but with action. Thoughts and prayers are never enough. We need solutions, and we need them now.
